The Body Mass Index calculator is a tool designed to help you better manage one specific aspect of your health – the amount of body fat you have on your physical frame. By entering your weight and height into a BMI Calculator, you will be given an index number. This number provides you with a very important piece of information about your general health. And being better informed about your health gives you the power to make positive changes.

The higher your BMI number, the higher your risk for diseases such as cardiovascular disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and even cancer. If you’re in a higher category, you may wish to seek guidance from your general practitioner so that you can start making positive changes to reduce your weight. The wonderful news is that even a small reduction in body fat will also reduce your overall risk for diseases.

This does not mean that a very low index number means a healthy weight. In fact, if the number gets too low, it may be an indicator of an eating disorder or some other underlying physical illness. The best number is one in the middle indicating a good height/weight ratio.

The calculator is easy to use, it provides your index number quickly, and requires no expense on your part. These are the primary advantage of using a BMI calculator instead of other body fat measurement methods. The other methods are more intrusive, could require a medical visit, will take longer to get results, or may require the need for experts with specialized equipment.

Using a BMI calculator on a regular basis and tracking your index numbers over a period of time can also be very helpful. By using the categories provided with your number, you can not only track changes, but you can also see if you are moving between the predefined categories. For someone who is trying to lose body fat and become healthier, knowing that you’ve moved from “overweight” to “healthy” is a major accomplishment and one which should be greatly celebrated

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

The body mass index is a comparison of your weight to your height. A higher BMI number usually correlates to a higher percent of body fat. Although some health professionals only use weight as an indicator to determine a level of healthiness, the Body Mass Index creates a more accurate indicator because it takes into account a person’s height.

The concept behind the BMI is simply the idea that someone who is shorter than average should also have a lower weight than someone who is taller than average. For example, someone who is shorter than average and weighs 70 kilograms will have a higher BMI number than someone half a metre higher, but who also weighs 70 kilograms

It’s very important to understand that the number provides information. You can use the index number to learn more about your health, but it is not intended to provide an absolute diagnosis.

Bedsides the index number, other factors must be taken into account before determining if a health issue truly exists. This includes age, gender, ethnic origin and level of fitness. The BMI index number is not very accurate when used with young children, growing children or those who are pregnant.

A perfect example of another exception is a body builder. Bodybuilders have an extraordinary amount of muscle, will get a higher index number and could even be categorized as obese. Yet, their true body fat percentage is much lower than indicated. This is because they are very heavy in relation to their height, yet the heaviness comes from muscle mass and not fat.

Although there are a few exceptions, for the majority of people, the body mass index measurement has proven to be an accurate indicator of how much body fat you have.

What is the Body Mass Index

There are several categories used within the BMI framework. Depending upon your index score, you will be placed into a category that should generally describe your overall physique. This framework is designed to be used by adults over the age of twenty. Children have a separate rating scale due to the fact that they are still growing and the factors of weight and height can fluctuate wildly.

The categories include Underweight, Healthy, Overweight, Obese and Morbidly Obese. The explanation below shows the range that belongs with each category.

To understand the BMI numbers, let’s take a look at someone who is 170 centimetres tall.

If he remains under 53.4 kilograms, he would have a BMI below 18.5 and would be considered underweight.

  • Between 53.4 kilograms and 72.2 kilograms, he would be considered healthy.
  • Between 72.3 kilograms and 86.6 kilograms, he is considered overweight.
Between 86.7 kilograms and 115.5 kilograms, he would be considered obese.
Anything over 115.5 kilograms and he is considered morbidly obese.

Overall, if someone is in the underweight, obese and morbidly obese categories, it’s important to take the number very seriously. From the results of multiple world-wide studies, individuals in those categories are more prone to have higher levels of illnesses, diseases and may even reduce their life expectancy.

Although the index number may be less accurate for children than it is for adults, it is important to note that older children who have a higher BMI number will more than likely become an adult with a higher BMI level. So, even for older teens, it’s not too young to start tracking your numbers.
